Response to EHV-1 Outbreak
Category: Old Fort Days Futurity
The Old Fort Days Futurity and Derby has NOT been cancelled. It will proceed as scheduled with the approval of the Arkansas State Veterinarian.
Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1) and Equine Herpes Virus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM)
The first week of May in Ogden, Utah there was a disease outbreak at a regional cutting horse show. There have been 21 cases of confirmed EVH-1 and of those 12 cases of confirmed EHM. There were 308 exposed horses in 18 mostly western states with 174 exposed premises. This data was from the situation report on May 19, 2011. The state of Arkansas does not have any exposed premises or horses. Next week there is a large barrel race futurity in Fort Smith, AR. The managers of the futurity have decided to go on with the futurity. Horses will be arriving this Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 8:00 a.m. and the barrel racing will start on Thursday.  I have discussed the situation with the AR AVIC Dr. Becky Brewer. I have decided that there is not enough scientific evidence to stop the barrel race. I will have the horses monitored and will be at Fort Smith personally on Wednesday for the check-in. If a horse owner feels strongly that there is too much risk to bring their horse then they should not come. All of the exposed horses have been identified and horses from those exposed premises cannot come to Arkansas.
